Bank at Google?
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 | Google | No Comments
I know Google is getting into a lot of areas, shaking up the ad industry, moving into the enterprise space with hosted apps (much to Microsoft’s chagrin), even betting on wireless and 700MHz spectrum. But banking?
Granted, Google offers Google Checkout as a payment method option to merchants and consumers buying online. And now Google in Malaysia is offering AdSense payments to be made through Western Union, according to the Ades blog That news was noticed by Steve Arnold, author of The Google Legacy and Google Version 2: the Calculating Predator, and pointed out to Bear Stearns analyst Robert Peck.
“We believe that the AdSense system is capable of morphing into a quasi-bank, particularly in regions with less robust monetary systems,” Peck wrote in a research note Monday.
Citibank, look out!

Customers are being offered fixed credit on the firm’s online payment system, Google Checkout, instead.
Google improves its Robots.txt tools
Friday, August 24th, 2007 | Google, SEO, Search Industry | No Comments
We’ve improved Webmaster Central’s robots.txt analysis tool to recognize sitemap declarations and relative urls. Earlier versions weren’t aware of sitemaps at all, and understood only absolute URLs; anything else was reported as Syntax not understood. The improved version now tells you whether your sitemap’s URL and scope are valid. You can also test against relative URLs with a lot less typing.
Reporting is better, too. You’ll now be told of multiple problems per line if they exist, unlike earlier versions which only reported the first problem encountered. And we’ve made other general improvements to analysis and validation.
Imagine that you’re responsible for the domain www.example.com and you want search engines to index everything on your site, except for your /images folder. You also want to make sure your sitemap gets noticed, so you save the following as your robots.txt file:
disalow images
user-agent: *
Disallow:
sitemap: http://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
You visit Webmaster Central to test your site against the robots.txtanalysis tool using these two test URLs:
http://www.example.com

Google Apps Now goes Globally
Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 | Google | No Comments
Our mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Note that twice in this eleven-word mission statement, we mention that this is a global effort, not just a problem we’re solving only for English-speaking users in the U.S. That global focus is critical, because fully 65% of Internet users around the world speak a language other than English. In fact, the Internet’s top 10 languages still only account for around 85% of users — and the remaining 15% represents almost 200 million people.
As part of our broader effort to make Google › Continue reading
Google Joins OIN (Open Invention Network)
Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 | Google, Internet News | No Comments
You’ll often hear members of our open source team say, “Every time you use Google, you’re using Linux.†It’s absolutely true. Check a Google engineer’s workstation, and you’ll probably find it’s running Linux. Do a search on Google.com, and a Linux server will return your results. Ever since Google got its start, Linux has given us the power and flexibility we need to serve millions of users around the world.
In turn, we feel a strong responsibility to the Linux community, and we’re always looking for creative ways to put our resources in the hands of Linux developers. That’s why today we became a licensee of the Open Invention Network (OIN), an innovative patent-sharing organization founded to create a legally protected environment for anyone who works with Linux.
The concept behind OIN is simple. All OIN licensees, including participants such as IBM, Oracle, NEC and Sony, agree to cross-license their Linux-related patents to the others free of charge. Patent issues therefore become a much smaller concern inside the community, and OIN members can focus their energy on writing and releasing software rather than vetting their code for intellectual property issues. It’s the legal equivalent of taking a long, deep breath.
For us, today’s announcement marks the latest development in a long, fruitful relationship with the open source community. The Google Summer of Code program has trained over 2,000 students as open source developers, many on Linux-related projects. We continue to fund external projects and host events like the Ubuntu Developer Summit and the Linux Foundation Innovation Summit. Hundreds of Googlers are submitting patches to Linux, and we’ve open-sourced over a million lines of code.
We believe Linux innovation moves fastest when developers can share their knowledge with full peace of mind. We’re proud to participate in an organization that’s making that possible, and we look forward to seeing OIN grow and thrive.
Google Webmaster Tools has Message Center
Thursday, July 19th, 2007 | Google, SEO, Search Industry | No Comments
Message Center: Let us communicate with you about your site
Today we’re launching our Message Center, a new way for webmasters to receive personalized information from Google in our webmaster console. Should we need to contact you, you’ll see a notification in your Webmaster Tools dashboard.
Initially the messages will refer to search quality issues, but over time we’ll use the Message Center as a communication channel for more types of information. Here’s an example: informing the site owner about hidden text, a violation in our webmaster guidelines.
For our webmasters outside the U.S., we’re also pleased to tell you that Message Center is capable of providing information in all supported Webmaster Tools languages (French, Italian, German, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, Russian, Chinese-Simplified, Chinese-Traditional, Korean, Japanese, etc.), across all countries.
Right now the number of sites we’re contacting is small, but we hope to expand this program over time. We’re also really happy that the Message Center lets us communicate with webmasters in an authenticated way. As time goes on, we’ll keep looking for even more ways to improve communication with site owners, but right now, why not claim your site in our webmaster tools so that we can give you a heads-up of any issues that we see?

AdSense Referrals 2.0 replace AdSense Referrals Beta
Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 | Contextual Advertising, Google, Google Adsense & Adwords | 1 Comment
Finally, Google released the AdSense Referral 2.0 after finishing their experiments and researches about AdSense Referrals Beta in the past 3 months. That means, as an AdSense publisher you will have more chance for additional income and revenue from Google AdSense with placing their CPA (Cost Per Action) based ads inside your website.
There’s some important point you should notice about this new Google AdSense CPA. The advantages and important points for using this AdSense Referrals can be seen below:
More products for referral
If you think that Google referral products are very limited, now you can choose the products that suitable and relevant with contents of your website. As we know that there are thousands of product has been offered by advertisers in AdWord.
More option for Category and Keyword Targeting
With Category and Keyword Targeting option, you may choose the products based on category and keyword as you wanted. You have full control to decide the ads, as you can choose specific advertiser, category, or product.
Optimized Ad Unit
Sometimes, it’s not easy to choose products that offered by Google AdSense Referral. Based on that case, Google AdSense provides the feature for optimizing the ads that will be displayed inside your site. It can be done with the “Pick best performing ads†option when generating the ads code. When you’re about choosing a specific ads unit to be displayed at your site, then Google AdSense system will compare your choice with the available specific ads and will display more optimized ads to be chosen.
More ads targeting for multiple themes
If your website is based on portal, communities, contains many articles, and has no specific niche, then the New Google Referrals 2.0 gives you more choice to select the ads based on specific keyword or niche. It’s totally different with Google AdSense for Content. While Google AdSense for Content is based on your contents, the AdSense Referral 2.0 is based on your chosen keyword. (Sounds similar with AuctionAds…. ech)
Higher earnings for your site
As CPA based ads, Google Referrals 2.0 offers higher earnings rather than AdSense for Content. However, the conversion rate for these ads is lower than AdSense for Content since you’ll get nothing if there’s a click but no action for some kind of transaction. The transaction is based on advertiser (merchant), whether it’s an action for sales, leads, or other transactions.
Endorse the Product!
AdSense Referral 2.0 ads is different with AdSense for Content ads, you may give the specific references to this referral ads inside your site. You may endorse, add review, and give more information for AdSense Referral 2.0.
If you want to get started with this new referral, you can simply click the AdSense Setup tab inside your Google AdSense account, and choose Referrals.
However, if you can’t see referrals 2.0 right away this time, you should check it back again in a few days or more, because this feature will be available in all Google AdSense accounts over the next few weeks ahead.
For some languages, the inventory of the ads could be limited at this time, since advertisers for this new referral are just getting started.
