Google Testing Alternative Fonts for Adsense
Autor Internet Marketing & SEO | 22.06.2008 | Category Google Adsense & Adwords
Yep, here as well. Including one very thin font (which genius thought of this?) and the beloved comic sans. Which is not funny.
I sense a certain desperateness at The Plex. Yet they do not offer tools to really beef up the revenues for Google and for publishers. Sad.
Saw it on a 468*60 ad. I thought I messed it up with a CSS change somewhere for a second. I think it was comic sans too. Didn’t look professional at all.

AdSense referrals will be retired
Autor Internet Marketing & SEO | 08.01.2008 | Category Google Adsense & Adwords
Are you currently displaying a referral unit for AdSense on your website? Then read on, because there are some upcoming changes to the referral program that you should be aware of. But first let me clarify that only referral units promoting AdSense will be affected by this change; referrals to other products and services remain unaffected at this time. This change to referrals promoting AdSense will differ depending on your location, regardless of where your users are located.
- If you’re in North America, Latin America, or Japan, the pricing structure for AdSense referrals is changing.
About a year ago, as an experiment, we changed the pricing structure for AdSense referrals so that when a user you referred to the program earned $5 within 180 days of sign-up, you would also earn $5. When that publisher earned $100 within 180 days and removed all payment holds, you’d receive $250. We have decided to conclude this experiment and return to the original pricing structure. As a result, we’ll soon no longer be offering the $5 bonus or $2000 bonus, and the payout for referring a user who generates $100 with AdSense in the first 180 days will return to $100.
Save your top queries before December 10th
Autor Internet Marketing & SEO | 04.12.2007 | Category Google Adsense & Adwords
If you use AdSense for search on your pages, we’d like to let you know about an upcoming change on December 10th that will affect your top queries reports. To prepare for a few upcoming reporting enhancements, top queries data older than a year old will no longer be available. In other words, you’ll only be able to view top queries reports dating back one year from the day you’re generating the report.
If you have important top queries data which are older than a year old, please run any appropriate reports and save them before December 10th. You may also wish to generate a report dating from the date you started with AdSense for search to today, as data not within the one year window will be continuously removed.

German official says ‘no’ to Google-DoubleClick deal
Autor Internet Marketing & SEO | 02.10.2007 | Category Contextual Advertising, Google Adsense & Adwords, Internet Marketing, Internet News
The data protection commissioner of the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein has come out against Google’s proposed $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick.
Such a merger would “lead to a massive violation of data privacy rights” for consumers in the European Union if the databases of the two companies were combined, says Thilo Weichert, data protection commissioner for Germany’s northernmost state.
In a letter to the European Commissioner for Competition, Weichert writes that search engines in general already violate consumer rights to “informational self-determination” by retaining data for so long, among other things.
A Google spokesman provided this statement: “We believe that this acquisition will increase competition and benefit both consumers and advertisers, and that it will ultimately be approved by government regulators.”
In response to concerns that the companies will combine their databases, Google and DoubleClick have pointed out that DoubleClick does not own, and has limitations on its use of, the data it processes for its publisher and advertiser clients.
In addition, the European Consumers’ Organization has lodged a complaint with the European Competition Commissioner, arguing that the merger would lead to a monopoly in the online advertising market, and Yahoo is challenging it there as well.
Some privacy groups in the U.S. oppose the Google-DoubleClick merger, and Microsoft testified at a U.S. Senate hearing last week that a Google-DoubleClick merger would be anticompetitive.
Allowed sites now an option in Google AdSense
Autor Internet Marketing & SEO | 12.09.2007 | Category Contextual Advertising, Google Adsense & Adwords
Google is acknowledging that this is a concern for publishers. From their help center:
We’ve added the Allowed Sites feature because we’ve learned that some AdSense publishers are concerned about potentially malicious behavior from others on the web, such as stealing their ad code and placing it on an inappropriate site. By offering this feature, we allow AdSense publishers more control over which sites or URLs can have their AdSense code.
The two selections in the account are “Allow any site to show ads for my account” or “Only allow certain sites to show ads for my account”. Then you get the option of adding domains or subdomains to your approve list.
If you belong to any revenue sharing forums or blogs, be sure to include those URLs in the allowed list. But do be aware that your ads will no longer show on cached copy pages or archive.org unless you add those URLs as well (including all the Google cache IP addresses).
However, there is one VERY odd thing about this new feature. If your AdSense code is on a site that is not on your approved list, ads will still show. Which means while your ads are displayed, you won’t get any revenue from the clicks (or show impressions either). I think a better option would have been to show PSAs or alternate ads if one is specified, although I suppose that might not be the best option for user experience, although it might mean we get to see some new PSAs other than the Katrina fund one.
Facebook Plans to User Ad Targeting Program
Autor Internet Marketing & SEO | 24.08.2007 | Category Contextual Advertising, Internet News
Facebook is planning a new advertising system that will target ad delivery based on profile information added by Facebook users.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the new system will “let marketers target users with ads based on the massive amounts of information people reveal on the site about themselves†with future development that is aiming to (in true Orwellian style…or should that Minority Report style) “predict what products and services users might be interested in even before they have specifically mentioned an area.â€
Monetizing social networking platforms through advertising has been a hard task for a long time now. For example, although News Corp may be reaping revenues from MySpace today, most of those revenues comes indirectly, such as through the Google search deal. MySpace rates have previously been reported to be a small fraction of 1 cent CPM.
Facebook seems to be experiencing stronger advertising rates, with recent reports indicating that Facebook charges around $10 CPM. There is always scope to improve, and certainly the more upmarket demographic of Facebook should provide high paying advertising opportunities if and when the ad delivery is sorted out and well targeted.
There will be some who will question Facebook’s moves. Google has previously come under fire for delivering contextual advertising in Gmail based on the content of emails a user had received. Facebook is not only going to use user data and networking activities to deliver targeted advertising, they are going past that and trying to produce preemptive targeted advertising based on what they think you might want in the future.
If Facebook can create a system that accurately preempts user desires, it’s not unreasonable to consider that Facebook could easily become the next Adwords as well; not even Googlecan currently predict the future.
